Virtual aging for living in a real world

When you visit the senior center is an attempt to raise awareness by the younger or able-bodied person [especially those in power] to see what older people in Bethel have to deal with at their senior center. The images are hosted by a friend at Visit Bethel Alaska’s Eddie Hoffman Senior Center.

There are suggestions there for obscuring vision or approximating a wheelchair on gravel, etc. that anyone can do to get a feeling for whether a building or service is either dangerous (fire exits, poor seating and lighting) or inadequate for other people. Some other checklists [see categories of postings] exist for assistive living facilities, but few if any for regular community facilities.

Another way to empathize came from finding a type of Internet search tool, http://www.answerbus.com/, which allows human type questions such as How to buy furniture appropriate for elderly people? The answer led to Continue reading ‘Virtual aging for living in a real world’

new life-course for an aging society

There needs to be an adjustment of living to fit the lifespan, but this seems an incomplete assessment. For example, if older workers weren’t discriminated against in hiring and in employment quality, I doubt there would be so few participating in work. The other bizarre aspect of changing demography, at least in the USA, is the voiced-in-public wondering Where is the educated workforce (and the post-bachelors educated)? I’d believe more in this “brains deficit” if I didn’t know so many bright people who are under- and un-employed against their will.

Of particular significance to western Alaska or any other small island developing state or rural province is the need as well to adjust social living to fit space. That is, many people, traditionally or as a “modern” adaptation, have seasonal residences. People work in one location, sleep in another or visit relatives and friends throughout an annual or multi-annual round. Remittances are sent around; children are sent around; knowledge is sent around. (Global kula ring)

Alphabetical listing (mas o menos)

Site Search Tags: (in addition to categories) or search on your own terms in the little box in the upper right of the pages. Synonyms will often find different posts. For example, if one is looking for Alzheimer’s checklists, search for dementia, tool (as in assessment tool), neurology, long-term care.

This type of index (search tags) has some bugs, still. It searches the webpage, not the individual posts or pages. Thus, if the term overlaps whatever is in the sidebars or headers, the results may be of everything (and therefore useless). I’m working on this….

HomeMods!

Home modification is adaptation to the living environment intended to increase ease of use, safety, security and independence. Some home modifications include:

* Lever door handles that operate easily with a push
* Handrails on both sides of staircase and outside steps
* Ramps for accessible entry and exit
* Walk-in shower
* Grab bars in the shower, by the toilet, and by the tub
* Hand-held, flexible shower head
* Lever-handed faucets that are easy to turn on and off
* Sliding shelves and lazy susan in corner cabinet
* C or D ring handles on cabinet doors and drawers for easy gripping

Home Modification can Promote Independence and Prevent Accidents

* Many persons are living in older structures that are deteriorating to the point that they are hazardous and contribute to the falss and injuries.

* Home modification and repair can help prevent accidents and falls. Research by the National Centers for Disease Control (CDC) suggests that one-third of home accidents can be prevented by modification and repair.

* Modification to the home environment can be a key factor in increasing the likelihood of older persons remaining independent and injury-free in their homes and active in their communities as long as they desire.

* Home modifications can enhance comfort, increase safety, prevent injuries, and facilitate ongoing access to community social, recreational, and supportive activities and services.

* Removing barriers and safety hazards also helps reduce the stresses associated with the reduction in physical capabilities as people age.

Inside this site are pictures, opinions, directions and part lists for making inventions to help myself and hopefully others in the same need. This was established to show others with low vision or physical problems, what adaptations can be made to help them function in the world with off the shelf parts and tips.
