Ruth Jefford was the first woman commercial air taxi pilot in the state, flying planes in Alaska for 60 years. A noted violinist, she was also the concertmaster of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra for almost 30 years….
 she was awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, created by the FAA to honor Alaskans who have flown safely for 50 or more years. Her last solo flight, when she was 82, was to Nebraska for a class reunion, Payton said. She also enjoyed riding motorcycles and sailing. She made her last sailing voyage, from Seattle to Seldovia, when she was in her mid-80s….
