Elder Care Initiative

The goal of the Elder Care Initiative is to promote the development of high-quality care for American Indian and Alaska Native elders by acting as a consultation and liaison resource for IHS, tribal, and urban Indian health programs.

* We recognize the Elder as an invaluable resource in our communities, deserving of honor and respect and the best care that we can give.

* The number of elders is increasing rapidly, especially the oldest old. The need to develop a range of services to assist elders as they age in their home communities has been identified as a high priority.

* The core activities of the Elder Care Initiative are in information and referral, technical assistance and education, and advocacy. These activities are accomplished in partnership with a variety of tribal, state, federal, and academic programs.

Customs Seizures of Legally Prescribed Prescriptions Generates Public Outrage, Endangers Seniors’ Health; Motives, Competence of Agency Challenged

ST. LOUIS, March 15 /PRNewswire/ — Daniel Hines, the publisher of a leading informational web site for America’s seniors today demanded that a Customs administrator apologize to America’s elderly for arbitrary and unfounded seizures of legally prescribed prescription drugs vital to seniors’ health and well-being. He also called for a Congressional investigation of what he calls a ‘blatant abuse of power’ by the Food and Drug Administration and a department of U.S. customs that has no apparent purpose other than to force elderly people into the flawed Medicare Part D prescription drug card plan.

At the same time, Gary Passmore, the executive director of the Congress of California Seniors (CCS) called for immediate release of the records of the seizures, including tests conducted to see if the prescriptions were safe or just less expensive.

Hines, publisher of http://www.TodaysSeniorsNetwork.com, says that the ‘apology’ from Customs administrator Vera Adams, executive director for trade enforcement for Customs and border protection in which she apologizes for not informing seniors of plans by her agency to launch the seizures is ‘inadequate’….

“Ms. Adams displays the arrogance of someone who has no understanding of the harmful impact of her actions but believes that she can interpret existing law as she sees fit,” Hines says….

Hines says that the seizures were conducted by Homeland Security, a disturbing example of an agency with no expertise in identifying ‘counterfeit’ prescriptions usurping a responsibility of the FDA, which is charged with the responsibility for prescription drug safety in the U.S….

Hines believes that it is time to thwart the continued blockage by Senator Bill Frist (R-TN) and Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) of an up-down vote on allowing access to prescriptions from outside the U.S….
