Senior citizen advocates armed with more than 5,400 signatures urged the University of Alaska Board of Regents to continue its policy of waiving tuition for the state’s oldest students.

Alaskans age 60 or older can take classes without paying tuition if seats are not filled by paying students.
….
The matter first came up three years ago, Hamilton said, when he was asked to justify why senior citizens should receive a discount as tuition increased for other students and UA officials were pleading with legislators for additional support….Furthermore, seniors can afford to pay their own way, Hamilton said.

“This group of people is the wealthiest in America, the wealthiest in Alaska,” he said, and they’re eligible for the same financial aid as other students.

Whip up some hurricane cuisine

Whip up some hurricane cuisine

Under her guidance, students at Florida International University in Miami have recently published ‘The Healthy Hurricane/Disaster Cookbook.’
….
People cleaned out supermarket shelves of foods laced with salt or sugar, while some of the best survival victuals – canned fish and canned beans, for example – went untouched. So Dr. Magnus, an associate professor of dietetics and nutrition, challenged some students to come up with tasty, nutritious recipes that require little or no water and no electricity to prepare.
