The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Family and Informal Caregiver Support Program
The Weinberg Foundation will help community partnerships develop innovative ways to support these devoted caregivers. Available Funding: Up to $9 million over three years, the Family and Informal Caregiver Support Program will support from 12 to 20 community-based Projects with grants ranging from $100,000 to $300,000 per year. 2nd Annual Rachel Carson Intergenerational Poetry, Essay and Photo Contest
The EPA Aging Initiative, in partnership with Generations United and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc., is inviting submissions for its Second Annual Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder Intergenerational Poetry, Essay and Photography Contest. The contest’s intergenerational approach reflects Carson’s desire to have adults and children share a sense of wonder about nature to discover nature’s gifts. How to calculate hazardous materials exposure for older adults

EPA Releases Report on Development of an Exposure Factors Handbook for Aging

Older adults may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of environmental contaminants due to differential exposures arising from physiological and behavioral changes with age, as well as the body’s decreased capacity to defend against toxic stressors. To address these issues and discuss practical considerations of the utility of an Exposure Factors Handbook for the Aging in conducting exposure assessments, a panel of experts in the fields of exposure assessment, risk assessment, physiology, and behavioral science were convened at a national workshop in February of 2007. This report summarizes the discussions held during the workshop, highlights several sources of existing data, and provides recommendations for additional research. Panelists included national and international experts in the fields of gerontology, physiology, exposure assessment, and behavioral science.
The workshop panelists discussed practical issues related to evaluating and protecting against environmental health risks posed to older adults. A summary report of the workshop is now available online [...]

Unfortunately, these grants, like most, are open only to existing non-profits and governments. There is very little available to people who are ill-served by their existing institutions and are unable to get those institutions to be responsive.

CLASSIFYING OLDER ADULTS BASED ON CRITICAL LIFESTYLE FACTORS THAT MAY AFFECT THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES

The purpose of the RFA is to encourage the identification of the critical lifestyle factors affecting exposure and activity in older adults living in the United States (US) and to assess whether biomarkers of exposure, activity, and health are available for use in exposure, activity, and physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modeling. Increase in effort in this area is critical to understanding how chemical and biological stressors affect the aging population, and how these interact with various lifestyle factors, health conditions, and life histories of environmental and occupational exposures that characterize the older adult population. This will enhance public health by reducing uncertainties in risk assessment associated with variability in the human population at large and by providing the scientific basis for health advisories specific to older adults.

Eligible Entities: State, territory and possession, and Tribal nation of the United States, including DC, for public and private State universities and colleges, hospitals, laboratories, State and local government departments and other public or private nonprofit institutions. Universities and educational institutions must be subject to OMB Circular A-21.

Anticipated Amount of Individual Award: $300,000 Due Date: February 21, 2006
